Seoul Business Plan: Make Your Money in 6 Months

In Seoul, you don't always need to build the next 100-year company. Sometimes you just need to catch the wave before it disappears.

Walk around Seongsu and you'll see it everywhere: a brand appears, creates a beautiful space, gets everyone posting about it, drops a collaboration, sells a limited collection, and six months later... it's gone. Another one has taken its place. In the West, we're obsessed with legacy. Build a brand that lasts. Find your timeless identity. Create something that will still be relevant in 20 years. Seoul can feel much more comfortable with the opposite idea: what if we make a huge splash, make our money, and move on?

You can see it in the way Korean brands approach pop-ups, limited editions, collaborations and physical spaces. A temporary store doesn't have to be a stepping stone towards a permanent flagship. It can be the business model. A product doesn't need an endless product line. It can be a drop.

A café doesn't necessarily need to become an institution.

It can exist for a year, become the place everyone wants to visit, and disappear before people get bored. The point isn't necessarily longevity. It's relevance - and relevance has a very short shelf life in a city that moves this fast.

There are obvious downsides to this. Trends disappear. Copycats arrive almost immediately. Consumers move on. And not every business can survive on novelty alone. But there's something Western businesses could learn from the mindset: not every idea needs to become a legacy brand. Sometimes the smartest business is the one that knows exactly how long its moment is going to last.

At Saint-Tran, we're fascinated by that kind of thinking - not because every Western brand should suddenly start opening three-month pop-ups in Seongsu, but because Seoul makes you question some of the assumptions we've built around what a “successful brand” is supposed to look like. Maybe your brand needs a hundred-year plan. Maybe it needs six months and a really fucking good idea.
